N-Trance are a British electronic and rave group formed in 1990 by Kevin O'Toole and Dale Longworth, who met while studying sound engineering at Oldham College in Greater Manchester. Signed to All Around the World, they became one of the biggest-selling UK dance acts of the 1990s, best known for their breakthrough anthem Set You Free. Their cover of the Bee Gees' 1977 disco classic Stayin' Alive was released in September 1995 as the third single from their debut album Electronic Pleasure, reworking the Saturday Night Fever standard into a hip-house floor-filler with new lyrics and rapping from Ricardo da Force — the former KLF rapper and producer who would go on to help define the N-Trance sound — and diva vocals from Kelly Llorenna.

The single debuted at number 2 on the UK Singles Chart in September 1995 and spent eleven weeks on the chart, becoming one of Britain's biggest dance exports of the year. It reached number 1 in Australia — where it was certified double platinum — as well as Scotland and on Canada's dance chart, hit number 2 in Finland, Iceland, Italy and Switzerland, and number 3 in New Zealand and on the pan-European Eurochart Hot 100. It earned Gold in France and Germany, Platinum in New Zealand and Silver in the UK, and crossed over to the United States, where it reached number 62 on the Billboard Hot 100.

The tongue-in-cheek music video, directed by Alex De Rakoff, plays up the song's disco roots with the group performing in a 1970s discotheque. It became a fixture on music television across Europe through late 1995, in heavy rotation on The Box, Germany's VIVA and MTV Europe.
