Cascada are a German Eurodance act built around Cologne-born vocalist Natalie Horler with producers DJ Manian (Manuel Reuter) and Yanou (Yann Peifer), who between them made one of the biggest crossover dance acts of the 2000s. What Do You Want From Me was the second UK single from their second album Perfect Day, following What Hurts the Most, and it was written by Tony Cornelissen with Reuter and Peifer, who also produced it.

All Around The World premiered the video on 19 January 2008, ahead of the single arriving in Germany on 7 March and in the UK later that month. Natalie and three friends move between a beach house, the sand and a late-night party, shadowed throughout by a young man who never quite explains himself — which is where the title lands.

The single reached number 51 on the UK Singles Chart across a three-week run from 29 March 2008, but the raw position undersells it: on the Official Physical Singles Chart it went in at number 12, and it hit number 10 in Scotland. It also charted at number 50 in Austria, 54 in Germany and 89 in the Netherlands. The UK release came loaded with remixes from the Clubland engine room — K-Klass, Flip & Fill, Hypasonic, Manox, DJ Gollum and Alex K all took a turn — and landed a fortnight after Cascada had played Manchester's MEN Arena on the Clubland Live Tour alongside Scooter and Ultrabeat.
