A friend of a woman hit and killed by accused street racers in Portland last Thursday has a message for would-be racers and parents.
“It’s a selfish thing to do, and we need parents to step up and make sure we know what our kids are doing,” said Jodi King, friend of 55-year-old Julie Skeen, who was killed in the crash.
Police said twins, Hannah and Grace Fetters -- both 18 years old -- were racing another vehicle around 9:30 p.m. Thursday, July 20, when they crashed into Skeen’s vehicle as she was trying to turn onto Southeast Powell Boulevard from 63rd Avenue.
The twins were also killed. Police said Hannah was driving.
The other driver who police said was also racing was not injured. He has not been charged with any crime, but the investigation is ongoing.
King told KATU News on Monday evening that Skeen was a lifelong friend who never let anyone down.
“An innocent woman, a great woman, was taken from people who loved her greatly,” King said.
She said Skeen was the nicest person you’d ever meet in your life.
“If this was my family, Julie would be right there fighting for me and making everything right for me, and that’s what I’m gonna do for her,” King said.
On Thursday night, Skeen was finishing her last DoorDash order of the night with her husband, Justin.
Her friends had plans with her the next day.

And she didn’t get the text but thought, ‘You know, it’s late. She probably just went home and went to bed.’ So she showed up at her house early in the morning for the garage sale, and she wasn’t there, and her car wasn’t there.”
Skeen had been taken to the hospital in critical condition, where she later died.
Her husband was seriously injured.
“It’s gonna be a long ride for him to heal,” said King. “And he’s also lost…
